Since then, it's surely been Dead Space all day, every day for the devs, drumming up the kind of buzz that seems even to overshadow the Dead Space remake for PS5 apparently on the periphery - albeit, a remake lacking in Schofield's involvement. It's no real surprise to see James unphased by any reference to Dead Space - the first Callisto Protocol trailer dropped with a "Schofield Cut" after all, referencing the game's director and the co-creator of the Dead Space series, Glen Schofield. "You actually call it the diegetic UI - a UI that exists in the 3D world," said James, after we failed to describe the representation of health and ammo in the game world in any broader terms beyond "the Dead Space UI." James didn't seem phased about the open reference, referring to the health meter on the back of lead character Jacob's suit as "a remnant of Dead Space," explaining: "we wanted everything to be clean - the best place to represent a health bar is where it's always visible to the player, so we put it on the back of the player."
That was until the discussion turned to the game's UI and presentation, in which case it became nigh impossible to avoid comparisons. Throughout these conversations, we touched upon the game's tangible connection to EA's Dead Space only in no more than fleeting references.

Sure, The Callisto Protocol’s definitely-not-evil corporation might have repurposed Callisto as a prison but it’s still a disturbing notion. Would you want to move into the ruins of LV-426? Just imagine if, at the end of Aliens, Sigourney Weaver and co hadn’t defeated the Aliens. Why? It’s the combination of outer space and deserted buildings that gives us the chills. However, what really has us unsettled us the revelation that, before Black Iron was built, there was a human colony. At least one of them values the truth over actually surviving till the end credits. That position isn’t shared by some of the other NPCs. His desire to escape from Callisto’s Black Iron Prison is, in his mind, more important than uncovering whatever horrors have infested Jupiter’s second-largest moon. The trailer also reveals that, unlike Dead Space’s Isaac Clarke, protagonist and prisoner Jacob Lee is fairly talkative.
Several of The Callisto Protocol team also worked on the original Dead Space, which also had you chopping off zombie limbs.
If the latter sounds slightly familiar, it should. Sure, the monsters featured in The Callisto Protocol’s story trailer are absolutely gross and the graffiti urging you to sever their tentacles suggests just gunning them down won’t be enough. The Callisto Protocol’s new story trailer gives us the chills and it’s nothing to do with the nasties roaming around.
